My ancestors immigrated from Germany in 1735. The German spelling of my last name is Leinberger. I have a German grandson and granddaughter. My oldest daughter lives in Germany. I'm glad that I took German for four years in HS and two years in college. This gives me the ability to talk to my grandkids in German.

My Great-Grandfather, Carl Martell Neuhausen, came from Stuttgart in the 1880s landing first in New York, then Chicago and finally Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the architect that designed much of the modern city; including the modern governor’s mansion and the Cathedral of the Madeleine. I am very proud of my family heritage.

My grandfather is from East Prussia and my grandmother is from Germany near the Danish border. I still have family in Germany. WWII caused so much destruction including separation of families. I'm glad my American family was able to find and reconnect with our family in Germany.

The supreme Allied commander of forces in Europe was an American of German descent, General Dwight Eisenhower, as was one of our top commanders in the Pacific Admiral Chester Nimitz.

Honestly really big applause for this. Most stuff that highlights Germanness just seems to focus on Christmas trees and renaming sauerkraut.

Really would be cool to see what you can uncover for a wider audience if you focus on the Midwestern states too where Sängervereine and Turnerhalls are still sometimes active including language use.

I’m from around stuttgart. I am German American. I live in the United States. My mother was around 8 or 9 at the end of the 2 war. She told me what it sounded like when the American bombs blew up. How her family would go around getting bricks to rebuild their homes and helping others to rebuild. I’m proud of my German family.

My mom immigrated from Germany in 1967…we still visit our family in Germany. My dad’s side is German only a few generations back. Some French on my mom’s side. With my mom being a new immigrant…it was interesting to see the German influence in the U.S. The U.S. , at least in the Northeast is very British and German…for obvious reasons. The area where we live, in south eastern Pennsylvania looks so very much like my mom’s lander (state) of Hesse…

We celebrate Octoberfest in Argentina even though the seasons are opposite here than in Germany.

I was young when I knew there was something Germanic about the USA especially through the names, anyway I started learning more about it from the 1880s immigration and operation paperclip and German Americans really shaped the country for what it is now.

This was cool. I have a fair amount of German ancestry, like many Americans do. I found out that one of my German ancestors came from Essen, Germany in 1857. He came with all of his siblings when he was 22. I was able to trace much of his journey through census reports, marriage certificates, birth certificates from his kids, and death certificates from him and his relatives. It was pretty cool to see.
