Fire departments put these red squares on abandoned buildings to let firefighters know the building is too hazardous to go into.

I cannot express the relief I felt reading "No Generative AI was used in the making of this video.". AI generated content has infested so many analysis and deep dive videos currently with its low effort, misinformation filled slop. It has made it very difficult for me to enjoy this kind of content and it runs the risk of me avoiding gems like these out of fear that it could be AI slop. Thank you so much!

You genuinely sounded pained and on the brink of tears at the end. It's clear this story hits you hard man. Good job on the video

I suspect that the red squares are also a reference to Carl Jung's red book where he would record his dreams. If you think about a save point as a point when James wakes up from a running nightmare, and writes down what happened in it, it makes sense that a save point would be a dream journal. The next night, he goes back to sleep, and the nightmare continues where it left off.

Mannequin: People always analyze the supposed "sexual frustration" themes, which is fine, but nobody ever connects it to Mary. The first Mannequin you see is literally lying down in a room with the flashlight on a mannequin that wears Mary's outfit, surrounded by more mannequin parts, a sewing machine, etc.
To me, this indicates that Mary was a seamstress. We hardly know anything about her as a person; even in the game manual, who she was is defined only as "wife", so I have to assume that entire room is designed around Mary's life in a meaningful way. If you think about it, this realization strengthens the symbolism of the Mannequin's design; as a seamstress, there would've been one or more mannequins in the house, and James would've been used to seeing her work, stitching clothes together... just like the two pairs of mannequin legs appear to be (with "invisible" stitching). Despite, at a glance, existing as mannequin parts put together, it's still a flesh-and-blood monster like all the others.
Most notably, though it's difficult to see in-game, it has a protrusion/lump with a single round hole on its midsection. Due to her illness, Mary must've had a stoma: a surgically created opening on the abdomen that allows waste to leave the body when part of the digestive or urinary system is diseased, damaged, or removed.
The top legs don't have feet, and the knees have slits behind them like they were sliced across, which could represent Mary's inability to walk when she became too frail. They also have a single hole on each thigh near the seam, but I'm not sure what they could mean. Perhaps holes that imply the top legs are prosthetics, while the bottom legs are "real", though the feet appear to be... attached to them.

I have a 9 red squares tattoo on my arm. Kinda like a reminder to accept responsability of my actions and keeping true to myself.
Ngl i was expecting mostly a video talking about it and not so much a retelling of the game plot. I understand context is important but wasnt as engaged as I was when I started it.
Its still a good first video!

About the Lying Figure: I always felt like its name has a double meaning.
"Lying" as in lying down, as Mary was bed-bound due to her illness, is obvious.
But also "lying" as in James might've been lying to himself for a long time, that everything might be okay, or that he might've been hiding something from Mary, or that he's currently living a lie -- the delusion that Mary died 3 three years ago and that he's now looking for her.
The monster itself attacks in two ways. When it crawls around it can bump into you, but of course its main attack is spewing some kind of harmful liquid spray at you. This could mean that Mary might've vomited a lot from her illness, or perhaps a side effect from the meds, and it can also represent "spewing lies."

I know this video is about the original game, not the remake, but there's an interesting detail added in the remake pertaining to the 9 squares specifically. Throughout the remake, when saving at the red squares, James is making fierce eye contact with the squares as if he's transfixed on them, Maria even points out that he zones out for a while if you save at one while she's with you. When you get to the 9 squares, if you choose to save your game there, James will be nervously avoiding eye contact with the squares, it's also the only time in the game where his head doesn't track to an interactible object like it did in the original. He really does not want to acknowledge those 9 squares.

Theres a red square hanging on a wall in twin peaks. Its in an episode near the end of season 1, i think right before things start getting trippy.
