  I'd argue the Tyrells would have been more directly beholden to Aegon for their new position than the HIghtowers would have been.  Between the Faith and the Citadel, they were probably seen as already having too much influence over the entire continent and Aegon didn't want them having even more control of the food supply.

  Hightower aside, the Reach has some of the richest most powerful lords in the entire realm, like Rowan, Redwyne and Tarly. They should've had an honourable mention!

  The Hightowers weren&apos;t insular to Oldtown. They intermarried into most houses; their housing of the citadel and the Faith also helps in cataloguing and networking the Reach.<br>I think Aegon choosing the Tyrells was pure Real politik; the Hightowers are incredibly powerful and the Reach is incredibly rich and populous; Aegon needed a weaker house to keep it divided and its head beholden to him....

  The Hightowers aren’t first men, they most likely came or fled from the Great Empire of the Dawn. This also explains their features: like House Dayne, the Hightowers regularly manifest features that are at first glance similar to the Valyrians, but not quite, and they actually predate the Valyrian Empire itself. <br><br>So the Hightowers are both ancient and mystical. And they have a history of subverting conquerors rather than trying to fight them. Very successfully. But at the same time, they almost always stay in the background. I doubt they would even want to become rulers of the reach: more likely the Hightowers would be quite content to &nbsp;let the Tyrells have that and stay out of the line of fire themselves; that‘s been their MO for literally thousands of years, and they may in fact have secret long term plans that motivate this approach.<br><br>At the same time, all the other major Houses of the Reach made the mistake of opposing Aegon‘s conquest, and so were not worthy of a reward. The Tyrells turned Highgarden over to him without a fight, so taking the castle away from them would have set exactly the wrong kind of incentive. And with Highgarden they then also had the largest holdings in the Reach.

  IMO the third choice for the North would be House Dustin due to their connection to the First King. They’d probably be more popular than the Boltons and culturally they are undeniably Northern.

  I was very surprised when HotD first debuted and somehow, people either never heard of House Hightower, or even worse, thought that they were &quot;just a minor house grasping for power&quot;<br><br>And honestly, it couldn&apos;t have been further from the truth. They weren&apos;t/aren&apos;t a minor house by any means, and not only that but they&apos;re arguable THE most ancient of the Noble Houses in the realm. Coming at a time before even the First Men had arrived, way back when the Empire of the Dawn was still kicking

  I could see the Crakehalls ruling, rather than the Lannisport Lannisters, though unlikely. The problem with the Graftons is that Gulltown is also home to the even-more-wealthy, merchantly, cadet branch of Arryns. If the blood Arryns went down, I very much could see the merchant Arryns migrating to The Eyrie seat, jumping the Royces. Kinda like the Lannisport Lannisters.

Ser Robb Reyne left to Essos with those who would become the Golden Company. So it’s a possibility the Reyne’s still live in the Company like a lot of other Houses do…
