  I realized this after I'd been out of the US a lot: we have The Store That Sells Everything, and many places don't. And there are many different kinds of The Store That Sells Everything in the US. So it took me some adjustment to realize that in France or in India, you often won't find pens in a pharmacy, toothpaste in a grocery store, or bread in a gas station. You need to go to the appropriate store for each item. Though in recent years the American store has caught on a little more.

  In your future explorations you need to visit the American West.  While there are hundreds of natural wonders, 3 are a must see.  The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park and any of several parks in California that have Redwoods.  The Old Faithful Lodge books up months in advance so plan ahead.  From Yellowstone you can go north to Bozeman MT or south to Jackson WY.  Both worth a visit.  From the Grand Canyon you can go south to Sedona AZ for some great desert hiking.  If you are up for a real wilderness experience you can explore the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern MN.  You will need at least 9 days.
