  In Pensacola I saw a Rugby teammate sitting at a local bar alone having a drink. He was in Navy flight training. I went over and spoke to him. He was having a drink after doing his first solo traps on the Lexington. I congradulated him and asked him if he was nervous about it. He looked at me and said "no, you either have it or you don't".  I've always remembered that and it applies to many things.

  was an exchange officer with the Air Force, and never had to worry about night blue-water ops until returning to the Fleet

  May I suggest you are over complicating this? Tens of thousands of pilots have been trained to do this. A carrier landing might be stressful but not as bad as being shot at or dealing with an unpleasant mother-in-law.

  Early on in the narrative, the speed of the carrier is described as a hazard.  No! …it helps the airplane by slowing it’s speed relative to the scarrier

  Giving them wings before even one carrier landing is just plain stupid. &nbsp;These days, GA pilots get their instrument ratings before ever flying in the clouds!! &nbsp;There is no substitute for experience.
