Japan's New Invention Just Replaced Solar Panels Forever

Japan's New Invention Just Replaced Solar Panels Forever #japan #solar #technology The solar panel on your roof throws away roughly three quarters of the light that hits it, because of a ceiling two physicists calculated in 1961 and nobody has moved since. In March 2026, a Japanese chemical company started selling the way around it. It is a film about one millimetre thick that unrolls like wallpaper, it is going into production inside an abandoned Sharp factory in Osaka, and the Japanese government has put more than 157 billion yen behind it. The technology was invented by a Japanese scientist in 2009. Japan then watched somebody else nearly run away with it. In this video, we trace how Bell Labs built the first silicon cell in 1954 and proved it on a satellite, why a single-material solar cell can never pass roughly 29 percent, how Tsutomu Miyasaka's first perovskite cell dissolved in its own electrolyte within minutes, what Sekisui Chemical is building in Sakai and on what timetable, why Panasonic is putting this into window glass instead, and where the main ingredient actually comes from. It is not mined. It is pumped out of the water table under one prefecture next to Tokyo, and that prefecture supplies about a quarter of the world. 🔍 TOPICS COVERED Perovskite, Tsutomu Miyasaka, Toin University of Yokohama, Sekisui Chemical, Sekisui Solar Film, Sakai plant, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, roll to roll coating, tandem solar cell, Shockley-Queisser limit, William Shockley, Hans Queisser, Bell Labs, Vanguard 1, iodine, Chiba prefecture, Nippoh Chemicals, Ise Chemicals, METI, next generation solar cell strategy, JR Central, Kyoto University, tin perovskite 📜 SOURCES This video draws on Sekisui Chemical's perovskite business briefing and investor materials, the Japanese Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry's next generation solar cell strategy of November 2024, Nikkei and Nikkei BP reporting on the Sakai production plan and on domestic iodine expansion, Solar Journal and Smart Japan coverage of the mass production announcement, published iodine production and reserve figures from Ise Chemicals and K and O Energy Group, Fuji Keizai market forecasts, and the original 2009 perovskite solar cell literature. 🏭 ABOUT THIS CHANNEL We investigate the technology quietly rewriting the modern world, and the countries building it while everyone looks the other way. The factories. The laboratories. The materials that are replacing the ones bolted to your roof right now.
