Comment

📡 What surprised you most about quarter-wave antennas?

Was it:

✅ The missing-half concept?

✅ How the ground plane becomes part of the antenna?

✅ The current and voltage distribution?

✅ How vehicle bodies act as a ground plane?

I'd love to hear what stood out to you most.

An excellent presentation on counterpoise antennas. I have a 41' ground-mounted vertical with 50+ radials buried in the ground that I use for amateur radio and shortwave listening. The low angle of radiation allows me to contact other amateurs around the world. Thank you.

Great content. Very informative and easy to understand. I like the cadence too. Gives my brain time to process.

Very interesting. I hope you will consider doing a part 2 (if you aren't already) and discuss Elevated Radials (Installed above ground level) vs ground level radials, because that changes the optimum number of radials by a significant amount.

thanks for all your videos!

i use a /4 lambda for my pota rig on a 24' telescopic tripod which is meant to be a light tripod but works phantasticly for my purpose and i can proof that when the radials are in the same plane as the horizont ie 90° to the radiating element i always get about 34-39ohms and when i slope them in a 45° to the ground it goes perfectly to almost 50 ohms, mostly i get about 49,4~49,5ohms at the feedpoint

I wonder if you can help me iam on the 11meter band can i put an a sirio 2016 11meter antenna on top of an 30 ft pole we an moxon 11meter antenna underneath and taking the radials of the 2016 11meter can i do that

which better? radial 90 degree or 45 degree?

RF current doesn't create radiation. You have stated this elsewhere. The current through a dummy load is a very poor radiator. Even if the current is high, the radiation will be low. What creates radiation is the current through the Radiation Resistance. Maximizing radiation is maximizing the current through the radiation resistance. Antenna resonance is nothing more than canceling the reactance. This can be performed by changing the length of the radiator, or adding a reactive device at the feed point to cancel the reactance at the desired frequency. There are other ways.

Current doesn't have to be strongest at the feed point. OCFD's have a 4:1 impedance transformer to increase the voltage by 2 and reduce the current. The current on a OCFD will be maximum at the center of the antenna. Not at the feed point.

Current on a vertical travels along the vertical portion and the horizontal radials. These conductors act as inductors and radiation resistance. The current resonates with the capacitance that inductance inherent with the stretch of the conductor. The lumped values should be zero for resonance.
