  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3haZexL6Rk&amp;t=4726">1:18:46</a> Every time I hear &quot; equipped with the latest SG radar sets &quot; or anything radar in the Pacific War I think of my Dad. He joined the US Navy in 1938 first to be able to send money home to help his family that were struggling on their 119 acre family farm in SE Tennessee. Although we were fortunate throughout the Depression to raise and grow our own food they could get very little money for their crops. He also was going to get as much training and education he could qualify for. The only ship he was ever assigned to was a minesweeper that was in floating drydock at Pearl Harbor for repairs on December 7th 1941 but him and two boat mates were in San Diego at radar school. When he got back to Pearl on December 30th he found he had been stricken from the roll and ordered to report to the Pearl Radio Hut and that was it. He spent the entirety of the War learning installation maintenance and repair of the multitudes of new radar systems and teaching what he learned to crews of everything from PT Boats to Carriers. He stayed in Radio/Radar until he left Active Service in 1948 through Reserve Service in 1958. 20 years &amp; 2 months of Military Service.

  Great video! I think a little more should be said about the role Radford and Nicholas played in the search and rescue for the Helena survivors. Both destroyers came under Japanese fire several times during the rescue operations forcing them to stop the operation and re-engage before returning to again search for survivors. The Radford alone rescued 468 Helena sailors and earned a Presidential Unit Citation for this battle. FYI I&apos;m the son of a Radford sailor.

  Excellent work.<br><br>What I find interesting is that after all the heavy-weight slug fests over Guadalcanal; battleships, carriers, major and minor fleet actions, both sides were so beat up and exhausted, that with one exception where the Japanese used two heavy cruisers, the US Navy and the IJN fought the rest of the Solomons engagements with light cruisers, destroyers, and PT boats. <br><br>That is a true measure of how hard the Guadalcanal campaign hurt both navies.

  This is an excellent documentary. This phase of the Pacific War is fascinating because neither side had an overwhelming advantage. The U.S. made a huge mistake by not developing a torpedo that worked before the war.

  Video suggestion: You could make a video just on Destroyer Squadron 23. It is sometimes interesting following the exploits and experiences of a unit through a war, like the movie &quot;Saving Private Ryan&quot;. You bring in more of the people so it becomes more personally engaging.
