We need more guys like Lukather and Beato who fight for real music and for the real artists. The schlock today in the Top 40 is transient - no one will remember it 40 years from now.

In 1982 my songwriting partner, Kelly Harland, recorded a solo album in LA for Epic Records. Her producer, Bob Johnston (Dylan, Cohen, Cash) assembled a crew of A-list session aces for the project. Lukather came in to overdub hooks and a solo on a tune of ours called "Can't Stop This Heart." He was, of course, the consummate pro, nailing his parts effortlessly, laying down an elegant solo with just a bit of bite. Perfection. But he did more. Even though Kelly had released 2 albums on A&M as a member of the band Lazy Racer, she was essentially unknown. Lukather treated her with the deference due a star, making sure she was happy with what he'd played, and seeming genuine in his praise for the song and her. As did all the other players. These guys brought more to the party than just amazing chops; what was a major life event for us was just another entry in their session datebook, yet they made you believe that it actually mattered to them.

I shared a plate of nachos with Steve at Cleveland airport a few years back. Then, Slash walked up and Skunk Baxter. We were on the same flight back to LA.

Why do I always feel like Toto is still criminally underrated? Those records still sound so incredible, the writing/playing/production is second to none.

Ten or twelve years ago, Steve played in Austria, in my town. I had a walk with my dog by the Danube and Steve was there, having a stroll too. I gathered all my courage and said "Hi, Luke" so he stopped walking, greeted me and pet my dog. I wished him good luck for the show, he asked me if i will come to see him, i said yes, then we said goodbye and resumed oir walk.
He's such a NORMAL person besides being the guitar and musical genius he is.
What i know 100% is, that this couple of minutes of having a chit-chat with Steve are a memory that I will cherish to my last day.

Steve’s rhythm guitar work on Michael Jackson’s Human Nature is incredible. The song just wouldn’t be the same without it.

I just love Toto and this interview. Steve Lukather is certainly not going to be initiating any copyright strikes against Rick.
