In some hotels nowadays, especially Hyatt, they want you to download an app so you can pay for parking, laundry, etc. Everyone wants you to download their app for that "tailored experience" and to "get free stuff". Everyone wants your credit card on file so "one click shopping" is a breeze. The amount of trust they want is absurd.

A University of Virginia Computer Science Professor owns a Cyber Security company. His company is employed to keep customers computers safe. He first asks for a tour of the business. As he tours he casually places USB thumb drives on various counters without his escourt noticing. Without fail, an employee will grab one, plug it in to see what co-worker it belongs to.

The Professor's escourt typically asks if he could get past their security, he then replies "I already have".

The real horror is when you suddenly see a popped-up command prompt shell that immediately closes up without you being able to see what happened

"Found" USB drives are one of the biggest things that my employer beats into our heads with cybersecurity. There are annual trainings about it and there are flyers all over the building reminding people.

Avoiding unknown USB drives is a pretty good PSA. Public USB phone chargers can also be potentially dangerous.

"hacking into computers is actually a spectacularly challenging thing to do. hacking the operator is... not."
favourite analogy; why try to break into a secure building when it's easier just to have someone let you in? "PIZZA! DELIVERY!".

"Do you chew gum from the subway?!" that is so evocative and terrible it should be a slogan for not using random USB sticks 🤣

Poor Kieran. He flew all the way from Florida to San Francisco to sit there and nod silently for 17 minutes.
