  Every battle in history has the same brutal truth: if you stand and fight, you may die however, if you run, you will definitely die. A thousand years of warfare made the British perfectly understand that truth.

  Out of all the countries that went to war, the British were the only ones that went to war on principle, everyone else went to war because they were either attacking or being attacked

  I remember seeing an interview with a Japanese soldier. He said the thing that shocked him most about the British is that, even though they had surrendered at Singapore, not one of them doubted that they would win eventually. To him, as a Japanese soldier who had been taught that it was better to die than surrender, it seemed a bizarre statement to make. However, he noted that the British were right all along, they won despite the setbacks and despite the amount of men and equipment it took.

  I think the Germans feared the Soviets, because it would be a fight to the death as both sides wouldn’t be interested in keeping their opponents alive. The British and the Germans had a level of respect for each other.

  My grandfather was a Dunkirk evacuee and went on to fight in the North Africa campaign. He survived the war and in the 70s emigrated to Australia with my grandmother. Even by that time he&apos;d still not got over what he experienced. he died in the 90&apos;s yet all his life he never recounted his life and experiences on the frontlines. When i was about 12 i had the audacity to ask how many of the enemy he unlived, His anger ensured i never asked again.
