For years I've wanted to do a series exploring Nuclear Power.
IT'S TIME.
I recorded this video about a year ago in the wilderness of Idaho at Idaho National Labs. I'm VERY EXCITED about this series, and I hope you are as well. For the first video, my goal was to understand the fundamentals of how a nuclear power plant works. I believe EBR-1 (Experimental Breeder Reactor - 1) is an amazing place to start.
If you'd like to get an old-school email when I upload the next videos (I won't spam you) in the series here's a link to receive email updates: https://www.smartereveryday.com/email
Thanks to everyone who supports on Patreon! If you'd like to consider supporting, here's the link: https://www.patreon.com/smartereveryday Thank you! I'm grateful for your time and that you're willing to learn this stuff with me!

Here's a link to the main channel video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVROsxtjoCw

I love how he stayed professional during the whole tour and at the very end he said he was a big fan of the channel. Andrew like Destin is a quality human being.

Andrew is a rock star! His love of history mixed with the way that history tickles his inner nerd is very entertaining. You can tell that he loves his job and does his very best to educate himself as much as possible to improve the visitors experience!

Andrew had a chance of a lifetime. Dustin, you got the best tour you will ever get there. The only way it could have been better, was to have the guys who worked there giving it.

The mystery machine:

At Experimental Breeder Reactor-I (EBR-I) in Idaho, the diesel engine was connected to a steam boiler system that was part of an emergency power generation setup.

The diesel engine drove an air compressor, which supplied air to an oil burner that heated a steam boiler. The boiler then produced steam to drive a steam engine or turbine that generated electricity. This was a backup system designed to keep critical reactor components, including cooling systems and instrumentation, operational in case of an electrical failure.

This setup was unusual because most emergency generators today are direct diesel-electric systems, but at EBR-I, they incorporated a steam-driven element as an additional redundancy.

Imagine being a fan of Destin and his work and then you’re told you are doing your normal job for the day specifically for Destin. Great job to Andrew!

I thought Andrew was maybe a little bit awkward socially, but after he opened up to you how big of an inspiration you are to him and how he’s been a huge fan of yours, I lean more towards he was shy and maybe a little star struck. We get to see that more vulnerable side of him during that point. Couldn’t think of a better send off for this video.
ANDREWS THE EBR TOUR GUIDE GOAT!
