  Marine vet, I went to machine gun school in Camp Pendleton, he was the demi god we all wanted to live up to. Semper Fi to all my Marine brothers out there.    USMC NEVER FORGOTTEN

  I recently saw a veteran say this about his Medal of Honor.<br><br>He said something along the line of: I was awarded this medal for the worst failure in my military career. This medal is proof, to me, that I failed to save all of my men.<br><br>We see the heroism of these medal recipients and admire them for their humble responses to it but the unfortunate reality for most Medals of Honor is that it is often earned for the worst days in their lives. These heros fight to protect and save their brothers and rarely save them all. Most of the medals of honor probably seem like marks of failure that scream &quot;at least I tried.&quot;<br><br>That&apos;s why every Medal of Honor and it&apos;s recipient should be treated with the reverence and more importantly, the respect that it and they deserve. It&apos;s not a badge of honor in most cases. It&apos;s a reminder of the worst days of their lives.

  His widow, Lena M. Basilone, died on June 11, 1999, aged 86, and is buried at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California. Lena&apos;s obituary notes that she never remarried and was buried still wearing her wedding ring.

  His wife (of one month) never remarried, that is amazing. <br>Side note, you can read about what “Chesty” thought about him as a Marine and when he found out about his death…and then years later seeing his own son in a hospital during/as a result of the Vietnam War. <br>IMHO, our country doesn’t deserve these brave heroes, and maybe never did. RIP to all of the brave service members who thought they were doing the right thing by God, Country, and Family.

  My grandfather was of that generation. There&apos;s a reason why, here in the US, we call the WWII generation The Greatest Generation. That would have been Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II.

  Chesty Puller is an absolute Legend (as is Basilone). &nbsp;He is the Most decorated Marine in history. &nbsp;Marines at lights out will shout &quot;Good Night Chesty, wherever you are&quot; Nic visits Chesty again in his video Chosin Reservoir about the Korean War
