  I’m really glad someone else has already corrected pronunciations because I was ready to throw hands 😂.  I could hear every kid who went through VA history in the 4th grade yelling ‘what the hell?!?’

  Interesting video but….You butchered the pronunciation of Powhatan, Wicomico and Mattaponi. I’m a Virginia and here’s how to pronounce your butchered words. Pow a tan, Why com I co (soft I), Mat ta po ni (hard I). AI is not your friend.

  Growing up, I was one of those countless Americans told that I was descended from Pocahontas and John Smith. I teach high school American history now. So of course, I have become about as versed in the founding of Jamestown as anyone and became aware that Pocahontas and Smith probably did not have children. I do have a great grandfather last name Smith. However, I put the theory of my connection to this unlikely couple to rest with a DNA test a few years ago. I have no Native American DNA. I do have African DNA that I had always suspected. Other branches of my family claimed native American DNA as well. My theory is that I had ancestors who were claiming Native ancestry to cover African ancestry to avoid problems. I think my maternal Great Grandmother even tried to claim Italian ancestry to cover African ancestry. I have no Italian DNA. I appear 100% caucasian and have never faced discrimination from Caucasians. Ironically, I have from non Caucasians. Sometimes humanity just makes me want to cry. I do Love everyone though.
