My great-grandfather fought in the Dublin fusiliers. He was gassed at the Ypres and later died from it in a hospital in England. His body was transported to Dublin, and then his home in Cavan. The local priest refused to bury him, as he had fought for the English. Soldier were sent from Dublin, and told the priest "if you don't bury him, we will bury you!' A year or so later, his wife was imprisoned for storing IRA guns in the thatch roof of her house. Just shows what a complex time it was in the country.

As a Catholic from Northern Ireland I find this piece of history fascinating.

This period for us Irish folk is often overlooked, especially here in Northern Ireland, had no idea about the Munster division and their tenacity, thank you for covering this.

My Grandfather fought with the Irish Guards Regiment, in the area of the Somme. A proud Irishman, from Manor Hamilton, Co. Leitrim. 💪🏻🇮🇪💪🏻

Thank you for highlighting a history of which every Irish person should know. Btw, Kilrush in west Clare, had the highest per capita volunteers in all the UK.

My grandfather was a soldier in the 2nd Batt Munster's, and was part of the "rear guard" action, he was captured in the orchard when they ran out of ammo, I have his tunic from his # 1 dress

The Irish have formed the backbone of the British military for centuries - Wellington had huge amounts of Irish men in his army.
My maternal grandfather from Wicklow was in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on the western front. He survived although was gassed and died relatively young in the 1950's. My paternal grandfather was in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and served in the Balkans. Invalided out at the end of the war. He survived until the 1970's when I vaguely remember him.

My Great Grandad was in the 36th Ulster Div. He was wounded at the Somme with a very interesting story. He was also hospitalised twice after it (all confirmed with documents, medals and even newspaper articles)
He went on to serve in WW2 in the Navy alongside his son (my grandad)

The way the Rep of Ireland treated their veterans in later years is criminal
