Wounded 14 times and survived, I would say he was a man of steel.

The way historians, and particularly ths British historians have treated Junger is so unfair. How many British, English, Canadian and Scottish soldiers spoke of their German counterparts with inhumanity. They all say the same. "It was understood we took no prisoners", " we bludgeoned them to death", "we knew they were half starved, so we bait them with ration tins". Just complete inhumanity. But let Junger describe the actual frenzy that overtakes a man in such moments and its "monster" this and "fascist" that. Hell even Erich Remark describes something similar with his description of emerging from dugouts after a bombardment. "In those moments, if your own father stood before you in the wrong uniform, you would fling a bomb into his face"

Dude was just a natural born warrior. Lots of soldiers end up enjoying combat, it’s taboo to talk about because you sound like a psycho. But it’s the same feeling as when watching a boxing or ufc fight, violence is a rush, it’s naturally intriguing to many men

I was failed in English Literature because I dared to say that Jünger's book was far more appealing to certain people than the poems of Wilfred Owen we were forced to study. I suppose my professor was one of those that reviled him

The more I hear about Junger and re read Storm of Steel, his is the better and more honest account of war.

When an ordinary man, especially a young man, is placed in the middle of an industrial death machine, where every moment could be your death or your friends death. You either fight against that death, desperately trying to save who you are, or, you become that death. You embrace it as your true nature.

Even in Nothing New on the Western Front, Remarque talks of how man’s true nature is that of a beast when unshackled from the bounds of civil society, how in the frenzy of combat you would not hesitate to chuck a grenade at or shoot point blank even a close relative if they showed up right in front of your trench.

How they would turn into killer mode and then just switch off and have no problem getting into eating frenzies, if for instance they had stormed an enemy trench and found food, how they would eat compulsively while surrounded by people they had just killed.
