* Bacon grease saved in a jar, with a lid. Great awesome flavor to cook with.
* Newspaper insulation, between layers of clothes.
Also inside of walls, a hundred years ago that is.
* Chicory root, and dandelion root coffee, dried and roasted.
* Hoover stew. Kept many fed.
Made with canned tomatos, macaroni or other pasta shape, sliced cheap chicken wieners. Salt.
* Mock apple pie, made with soda crackers ....
* Flour sack clothing. First white cotton, but eventually bright patterns ...
* Eggshells calcium ...
for people, pets, and the garden even.
* They wasted absolutely nothing at all. Everything had it's usefulness.
* Vinegar for everything, and that vinegar was likely homemade too.
* Lard for cooking, and for skin care too. Sure better than today's hydrogenated fats.
* Dandelion greens, flowers and roots. Different recipes for each. part
* Feed sack quilts. Made beautifully, from scraps.
* Twice brewed coffee grounds. Dried and used again. Finally ending up in the garden, as fertilizer.
* Onion poultice for chest colds, even for pneumonia.
This was before antibiotics.
* Sourdough starter from the air, from wild yeast in the air.
* Onion ash for wounds, mixed with honey. Thus avoiding infection.
* Backyard chickens. With surplus eggs to sell or trade. Old hens became a flavorful Sunday dinner.
* Black strap molasses as sweetener. Full of nutrients.
* Bone broth, from the dinners they cooked. Simmered for hours on the back of that wood stove.
* Tea leafes, used a second and a third time, and composted in the garden after that.
* Cardboard inner shoe soles, when the shoe soles were worn thin. Cardboard cost nothing.
* Salt pork preservation. Before refrigeration, meat was salt cured, or smoked, at home. Long lasting.
* The root cellar, dug into the side of a hill, or underneath the house.
Kept root vegetables, cabbages, apples for the cold season.
* They had the knowledge and skills to survive, we no longer do. Few exceptions.
* Pressure canning meat at home. Done properly lasts years.
* Bone broth from every animal. Great source of nutrients. The foundation for many dishes.
* Lye soap from kitchen waste. Done once per year.
* Neighborhood barter network. A very traditional way of doing things and taking care of each other.😊❤

I was raised in the country. Most of things in this video was passed down to me and we experienced growing up. I'm 48 years old and my family still has a root cellar.

I am going to do the sourdough starter from air.. time is of the essence. I will also try the ground up egg shells. I wish they still made potatoe sacks the same as the olden days, but I have been saving every bandana for the past 10 years and I now have enough to make my very own heriloom quilt for my 1st grandbaby 😁... Ive never seen one and hope it will be the start for many family's to come... 💜

Thank you! This wonderful video reminds me of my Granny and Great-gran, who taught me many of these "secrets." It should be required viewing in every Home Economics class in high school. Oh wait... they stopped offering those, along with Wood, Electronics & Auto Shop. No wonder kids can't do anything these days besides push buttons on a cell phone. This country is doomed~:face-blue-covering-eyes:

The network was the wealth. The community is the wealth. When shtf, and it will soon, we are going to have to find ways to rely on each other. What are you good at?
