  I'm a bit old (late 40s) and lived through the end of the CD era. I just want to throw out there that, following the 80/20 rule, if 20% of those 21 million streams bought your album (I grant that a lot of those might be repeat listeners), and if you made just $1 per album sold (they used to sell for like $12 to $19 dollars back in the day), you would have made around $4.2 million dollars. I congratulate your success fully, but it doesn't obviate the fact that streaming rips off musicians.

  It’s genuinely insane what a small amount of money this is. Think about what musicians used to make for the same level of business.<br><br>EDIT: After a lot of back and forth in the comments, I actually think it’s more nuanced. <br><br>10 songs to a $15 CD album = 60 cents per song (and that’s not unpacking the physical costs). That’s 60 cents per song. 200 streams = 60 cents. <br><br>SO…if you’re making singles? Streaming is probably just as good as physical CDs. If you’re making albums, where someone is listening to most of the songs once or twice? Physical/digital direct sales are indeed wildly superior.<br><br>So, essentially, it USED to be as if every single song on an artist’s album was listened to 100-200 times. That was the money they were making.

  you are one of the few people who talk about the different payouts based off of where they stream. Most of my listeners are from the Philippines so they payout is significantly lower than everywhere else!
