Tirpitz lives on, as some of the Norwegian roads were repaired with her salvaged armored plating

I remember seeing Tirpitz lying upside down in the fjord when passing by in our Opel Rekord family car in the summer of 1954. It was being dismantled by a Norwegian salvage company. A lot of valuable steel in that ship. I was 10 years old at the time.

A relative of mine took part in Operation Tungsten. He was a Corsair Pilot from HMS Victorious. He later became the first Royal Navy Pilot to achieve Ace Status in a Corsair.

My Grandad was on the HMS Formidable helping attack the Tirpitz in 1944. He passed away a few years ago, wish I had been able to show him this… 😢

Tirpitz and Bismarck were the same size. As built, they were very similar, but Tirpitz gained weight during her career.

Neat. My dad who was in the Norwegian army saw Tirptiz in the fjord with a hole in the bow. He fought with the Russians in the far north after escaping a prison camp and training in Sweden.

Its amazing how long the Brittish managed to hold her in port, from sep 43 to the end of the war, those German sailors culd serve almost 2 years stuck deep in a fjord some sailors might have been replacements getting to the ship by train and never even got to set sails more than a few towed km.
