I did a screenshot of a video that had two trees in it. Early in the morning no clouds but some mist foggy sky and background. I spent hours over two days to mix that just a hint of green sky. You live just an hour away. I will have to go to a class. Come to think of it it can be my wife’s birthday present for me.

Love to join you en plein air Stefan but I'm in Australia - great colours here in the landscape, you should visit :)

I have this green I’m trying to mix. First improvement in getting close was printing the image with a good printing company like BayPhoto. Now I don’t touch my computer screen with paint. It’s not backlit big improvement. I also noticed this image would change from its more green to its more blue. I use incandescent lighting now too.

I use alizarin crimson because I like it.
It does limit the range of colours you can attain in a limited pallet but I’ve always loved that deep funky blood red.
   Cad red looks plastic.
Permanent alizerin looks organic.
Please realize this is just how it feels to me

A limited pallet is how I figured out colour.
Lately I’m playing with magenta, cerulean, Hansa yellow, black and white ( I can’t mix a black with this pallet)
Sometimes I will use one pallet for one part and another pallet for another spot. Sometimes it works and sometimes it’s too much

Now that is interesting that you can mix 3 cool colors and get a warm color.

Virgil Elliot says certain natural earth pigments suck the oil out of overlayers and basically get darker over time. All the natural eaths can also absorb atmospheric moisture, like yellow ochre.
Williamsburg have some fantastic synthetic coarse grind earths that are dark in mass tone but thin out into gorgeous undertones to create a huge value range.Check out Stil de Grain_ Italian Pink_ Dutch Brown etc.
Gamblin has an asphaltum hue made from synthetics.
The transparent metal oxides are also great for portrait skin colours_ just add white.
You note that Vasari won't even mention pigments in their mixed colour tubes.
Then there are sets of greys by a certain landscape painter with no listings of colours, again.
I smell a rip off.
