I always assumed that Aragorn was not convinced that he, himself, would eventually succumb to the temptation of the ring. Letting it go beyond his own reach must surely have been some relief to himself.

Elrond's admonishment raises another point: as a non-Hobbit, Aragorn wasn't immune to the manipulations of the One Ring. He might have fallen to it the way he'd just witnessed Boromir falling, and taken it for himself, and at that point, none of the others could have stopped him. So, both Elrond's warning and Boromir's fate, I think, influenced Aragorn's decision to let Frodo and Sam continue alone, and to go after the allies in immediate danger.

There's also a brilliant act of deception with Aragorn's choice. By following Merry and Pippen with the powerful members of the Fellowship, it further hints that these Hobbits have the One Ring. Had Aragorn gone East with Frodo and Sam, it would have become the focus for the search for the One Ring. I don't recall of this deception was mentioned in the books, but I suspect Tolkien knew this.

I think it's fascinating that this question is so open-ended. It's a good lesson for writers that you don't have to explicitly acknowledge every possibility of every plot point to still have a compelling moment

I always thought they chased Merry and Pippin to keep Frodo’s mission in secret. If Saruman discovered their plan it would be over.

I love this section of the book. While Aragorn's decision is based on sound reasoning, in the end he lets his heart decide. Which is a great way of making decisions: a combination of facing the facts, trying to foresee the consequences, acknowledging what we don't know or is uncertain, and staying true to one's heart.<br><br>What made Aragorn such a great man is that in spite of the pressure on him, he was aware of what was in his heart and took time to analyze it. Wise is the man who knows what is in his own heart.
