"I was there, Gandalf, 3000 years ago, when THACO freaked everyone out, and Monks disappeared, when the strength of men failed....."

I remember really enjoying 2E when it was released, though as the splat books began to accumulate its got a bit crazy. However, what the 2E ere really excelled at was supplemental material Spelljamer, Ravenloft, Dark Sun. Seriously what an amazing time that was with some really fun and exciting ideas. I am certain that's why so many people remember this era fondly.

But I do gotta say that 2nd edition has some of the best source books & box sets of all time. Their Greyhawk supplements are vastly underrated.

2e's cosmology was the first D&D lore I learned about. Always loved the idea of how the inner and outer planes were arranged, especially the elemental planes.

I remember seeing 2e in a local game store in the early 90s and being confused. A book for fighters, a book for clerics.. the hell! Our player base were at the age where everyone was off to college and university and moving away. Our gaming circle was broken and I couldn’t bring myself to looking into 2e.
Never played it and never played any further editions either. Partly snobbery and partly upset everything was changing, my life and the game I loved. lol I’ve been the same since

This made me really miss playing 2e. Maybe it’s nostalgia speaking, but it was so much fun. Strangely, one of my favorite things to do was play strictly to the encumbrance rules. Even if my DM didn’t follow it, I did as a player so I knew my character could reasonably hold, travel and fight with all he had, or was limited to carry on his person.

2nd edition was optional rules at our table.

As the survival guide where in use, most 2e pieces fit with just a bit of adjustment.

2nd ed was the edition that was current when I started playing. I still love it dearly to this day.

The single class bard was inspired by a very similar class that appeared in issue #78 of dragon magazine in 1983.
Specialist wizards are a late 1st edition thing.
They first appeared in the 1988 Forgotten Realms suppliment "FR6 Dreams of the Red Wizards".
And Drizzt inspired the 2nd edition ranger, not the other way around. The first book to feature the infamous dark elven ranger came out in 1988.

I think some inspiration came from Advanced Squad Leader too in terms of sophistication and use of binders for storing rule/monster pages with punched holes.

First off: Thank you so much for making these videos. You’re doing some incredible work.

2e is probably the defining edition for my friends and I. We’re all in our early 30’s currently, so most of us started with 3.5e, and we’ve played every edition of the game save for 2024.

The 2e campaign I ran for us was set in a homebrew world I made that was reminiscent of the Arthurian Myth, with a bit of the camp of Princess Bride thrown in for good measure.

We played that campaign for a little over two years, meeting almost every single Friday to play within that span of time before it came to a close.

We were all roughly 18-19 when the campaign began and roughly 20-21 when it ended. So I’m sure the nostalgia of those years plays into how fondly we remember it, but even so we STILL reminisce and tell stories about the adventures in that world.

Something about 2e just clicked perfectly for us, and that’s cemented its place as our favorite edition.
