The dim display problem's mainly because the heating wire's are under current even when the deck's in standby. You can either add a circuit to disconnect when in standby using for example a small logic circuit and a relay or - who would have guessed - re-install the power switch that Pioneer had rationalised away from this model. Other models do have that switch, the mainboard even has the place drawn in.

Horrible memories of these. Bought one brand new back in 1995. Nothing but trouble with it, the logic controls went crazy occasionally and could turn into stop mode in the middle of a recording, or just freak out and randomly go into any mode just like that without a warning. As a stupid teenager i (ofcourse) voided the warranty by fiddling inside it. Got it to work-ish by shorting the switches that senses a cassette inside which helped me getting it under control. For a while. After a couple of years i scrapped it and went back to a late 70's Akai 😀. This kept me off Pioneer for years.

With the VFD it's always worth checking voltages, I had a dim sony display and heating the wires didn't work. I found a schematic and traced the circuit back to a couple of fuseable risistors that had blown. I was surprised it worked at all with the two main voltages missing.

Pioneer made good mechanisms. They might look flimsy, but they always work really well. I think their legacy with car stereos helped them a lot in this regard. If you've got the time its often worth readjusting the speed a second time after a few weeks. Decks always seem to drift when they wear into new belts. As for the display. It has a lot of hours on it. Some dim like this. Others don't. I don't know why. One thing you can do to brighten it, is remove the orange filter. Underneath is the VFD will be green with a few red highlights. They put different filters on the front for either red or blue writing, but the VFD they used was always the same. Removing the filter will make it much brighter.

"Der Wolf und die sieben Geißlein" is what eventually fixed everything. :)

I just purchased this same deck a month ago and already replaced the belts. As you look at the drive motor from the top, the support post to the right doesn't actually attach to the motor which can be seen at time stamp 5:44 . You can literally flex the motor just enough to slip the new belt on. It takes a bit of acrobatics but it can be done way easier than complex disassembly.
