This player width is actually a standard width. There are 3 audio component standards. Mini, Midi, and “regular” (approx 17”). Oh, there is another standard which is rackmount at 19”. This player is a midi width, a popular size upwards to around 2000 in Asian countries.

A bit of a story... When I was a kid, about 10 years ago, I picked up a very similar unit at a flea market. A Sony CDP-45 manufactured in 1986. I've always loved 80s electronics so this player was especially interesting to me. The man who sold it to me assured me it worked, but as soon as I tried it at home, the loading mechanism did the exact same thing as shown in the video. I took it apart and tried to repair it but couldn't get it working. I was pretty upset about it at the time and almost threw it away, but for some reason I felt like I should hold onto it. Fast forward all these years, I come across your video. I ran down into the basement and lo and behold, the cd player is still sitting down there. I followed your process to replace that belt and sure enough, the player loads and plays CDs perfect now!

I'm certainly glad I held onto it. It made my whole day finally getting that old player working after all those years. Thanks for posting this video, you certainly earned yourself a subscriber!

Fantastic channel, especially for CD player enthousiasts. Love getting this overview of- and insight into the history of CD players and their mechanisms, keep up the good work!

I have one of these, acquired back in the 1990s. I used it for quite some time, really loved the super fast TOC / track loading, nice tactile buttons, decent display etc. Used it in numerous amateur theatre shows for sound effects / music, where a quick, easy, tactile intuitive interface are appreciated. It would play damaged / scratched discs in many cases where other machines wouldn't, so it was just a nice machine to use and have on hand. Still have it somewhere (and I ended up with a second one as well) - getting inspired to dig them out and give them a run again :)

The old machines are very thankful and mostly in better quality than players from the middle 90's and above, and more rapair friendly in my opinion.
Congratulation to bring another vintage cd player back to life !

This was my first CD player. I got it for Christmas in 1986, when I was sixteen. In 1990, it wouldn't play a disc unless I barely touched the spinning disc clamp.

I had that player. It looks like a multi system player that used to be sold on military bases overseas.

My dad bought the same CD player in late 1986. So after watching this video, I purchased the same player on eBay as parts or spares and it had the same fault on the video. Fixed within minutes. What a great player, sounds much better than my other mid, late 90s cd players.

Great channel too, thanks again.

1980's was the real genesis of the 14" wide midi systems that were ever present into the 1990's when they tried to kill vynil off with the mini systems at 11.5" wide... so it would likely be intended for CD compatible midi systems or supplied with one optionally in the day... though 1986/87 CD's were still on the pricey side compared with cassette or LP

Had this one growing up - our first CD player. One very important thing to note - those three pegs with felt can, after enough time, slightly contact the CD and damage it while playing. I know this because my little brother was playing a CD and then put it on pause and forgot about it. When we came back maybe the next day we had discovered a small groove was worn on the bottom of the disc where those pegs were. That was the first ruined CD I'd ever seen in my life. Maybe why you didn't see that in later designs!
