  I feel like the only way to do a faithful adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo is a mini-series. A movie is too short.

  The reason that anime is called &quot;Gankutsuou&quot; or &quot;The king of the cavern&quot; is because that was what the translated version of the book was originally known as in Japan.

  As a French person whose favorite French book is The Count of Monte Cristo, I had been told that there wasn&apos;t any faithful adaptation to the book - but I found one last year after finding myself extremely frustrated and disappointed in the 2024 movie. <br><br>It&apos;s a 1979 mini-series in 4 (edit: not 6 as I initially wrote) 1-hour long episodes, starring Jacques Weber, and though he was a bit old to play young Edmond Dantès, he crushed it as Monte Cristo. The villains are all spot on (Villefort looks exactly the way I pictured him in my head), and there are only extremely minor alterations to the original plot. <br><br>The cinematography is definitely... not top-tier, as it was made on a TV budget at the time, but if you want to see something truly faithful and with mostly great acting, go for it ! I don&apos;t know if you can access it in the US but it&apos;s on the INA madelen website. No idea if there are English subtitles though...

  The 2002 film slaps. Definitely a cliff notes version but it’s a great flick

  This movie was like the creators watched the 2002 movie, read the cliff notes of the book - then made an adaptation.

  Check out Gankutsuou, The Count of Monte Cristo anime from 2004. It&apos;s a deep cut but everyone whos seen it rants and raves about it. They take some wild swings, both in the animation style and in how they choose to adapt the story. It&apos;s set in the future and the Count is an alien? I need to rewatch it myself, lol. But, it understands the heart of the story. That&apos;s the important part. And if you are willing to talk about adaptations I would LOVE to hear your take on this one.

  I&apos;m french. The book is one my favorite.<br>Most French films for the last twenty years or so have been similar and tell the same story. They&apos;re either social dramas or terrible comedies. <br>The Count of Monte Cristo saved French cinema. It&apos;s a true masterpiece, and I don&apos;t mind the liberties taken with the book if it&apos;s to produce such a film. <br> <br>In fact, the film was so successful that book sales skyrocketed. And it&apos;s rated as the best French film ever on Allocine (the French equivalent of IMDb).

  Pre-watch: you gotta give the 2002 version a shot. I don&apos;t know if it&apos;s better, but it&apos;s what got me to read the book and I loved it as a kid
