I can just imagine the nurse presenting an iPad to you with "Tip your nurse: 20% 30% 40% or custom"

this is a predatory unregulated system that exploits you when you're most vulnerable. It's not just a scam, it's a crime against humanity and ethics.

That's the American "health care system" (actually corporate profit system) working exactly as designed. However, it is one made in USA product that we should definitely NOT be exporting.

When your govt pays for your health they have a stake in prevention. In the US, being sick is good for GDP

We went to a private ER for a pain my wife had. Since it was Friday evening, we did not want to wait until Monday, so we decided to go to ER. We have Anthem PPO, she checked in, provided all the insurance information, and she was charged $100... We were surprised to get a $500 bill later because they are out of network. I would have thought they would have told her at time of checking in. Now we know better. And regarding the ER visit, it was the doctor's opinion it was nothing to worry about... So we basically went to ER to be told she can go home.

In Belgium, a visit to the emergency room would cost me under 10€. It used to be entirely covered by the statutory health insurance and had to be introduced to prevent people from swamping emergency rooms as a short cut for even minor complaints. My German brother who has no health insurance here paid 50€ for 3 hours in my Belgian emergency room for a serious bladder complication, received treatment and relief and went home with a catheter, a prescription and pain medication. My GP who referred him took 50€ for a 1-hour home visit wjhere he spoke German to my brother to build trust (he speaks 4 languages), and both bills were reimbursed by the German h3alth insurance.

In my opinion, the fact the nurse (apparently) didn't disclose that she doesn't actually belong to the hospital and will charge you separately later on should make the bill null and void.
Imagine you're going into a perfume parlour, get consultation from someone with the store's tag on their suit, buy something, leave.
And then a few days or weeks later you get a bill for the extra consultation service by an independent contractor.
You'd laugh and throw the bill into the bin.
