Is there anyone (else) alive who recognizes Barbara Billingsley?? She was Beaver's mother (June Cleaver) in the classic TV series "Leave it to Beaver" (1957-1963). It's the casting to put the prototypical 1950's TV mom as the jive talking old lady that truly sells the humor IMHO.

The actual "joke" that all the reactors miss is that she played June Cleaver on "Leave it to Beaver". Quite possibly the "whitest" woman in tv history.

Barbara Billingsley was a total pro when she accepted this role. She spent time with someone who was familiar with the dialect and practiced with him so that she got all of the lines pronounced in the right way.

I went to see this in the theater when it first came out, and this scene had the whole place cracking up, not because it was an older white woman speaking jive, but because it was Mrs. Cleaver.

Cool story: when they were casting, the director was looking for a black man to do this. These two guys were high school friends and both showed up with the whole skit they did themselves. They handed the English subtitles to the director and producers and went for it. Everyone was in hysterics and they were immediately hired!!

The total brilliance of this movie was that they intentionally casted serious actors in comedic parts. Pure genius.

Casting Barbara Billingsley in this role was cinematic genius at its finest. It was so against type and that's what makes the scene unforgettable!

I'm a Gen-Xer and for those who are younger than Gen X, you have to understand that we had only three channels growing up, and "Leave it to Beaver" was one of those afternoon TV reruns that you basically had to watch because there wasn't anything else on.
