Honestly Homelander as a actual true hero with his same backstory he would still be very interesting character.
Him still raised in the lab, experimented on, tortured and treated with only fear and joining Vought and still becoming a hero would be interesting take.

He is still starved for attention and love but he actually becomes a real hero and saves lives to get that.

The most evil thing about Vought is that they know they are evl. They couldn't allow Homelander to grow up to be more Clark Kent, because he would utterly destroy them.

In this scenario, I could see Homelander breaking away from Vaught and trying to fight them, thinking he could easily with a couple of the Seven at the time. But then realizing that it's not so easy because of the economic power and Vaught's ability to use propaganda to make Homelander look like a villain. Which could make an interesting story, where Homelander would have to find another way to fight Vaught besides just his superpowers alone.

This actually could've happened if his first day as a hero went better. In The Boys Diabolical we see Homelander actually did at first try to be a legit hero until he learned that he could just lie

Id have him go bye "superstar" he'd be an asshole still but to a far far more tolerable extent, the kinda dude who doesn't realized he insulted you and is actually sorry, and he'd crash out from shit like everything about the deep, and storm front being a Nazi and shit like that, and he'd generally just be pissed off when other heros don't act like heros

I also had an interesting idea too. Imagine if he was just as unhinged and narcissistic, but he had a moral code and was kinda like the ghost rider of the boys universe. He was doing all that shit to very evil people. One day a meeting of some very corrupt politicians happened and then he started lasering the whole crowd. You get the gist

Au homelander: after knocking away a genuine unscripted villain i feel like im walking in a world made of cardboard, always constantly worried about breaking something, or someone, never allowing myself to let loose without killing anyone… but you can take my punches, can ya? Well, allow me to show you, just how strong i can REALLY get.

What's wild is that it seems like he actually did start out wanting to save people in The Boys diabolical but he just never had a chance his brain was too cooked lol
