As a returner, I will test the commitment of the opposing net player to the center by going down the alley very early in the match. Many times this takes the net player out as a poaching threat as they are afraid of getting beat down the line! Truth be told, my down the line shot stinks!

I've taken this to heart, and now when I play doubles, I gauge how aggressively I'm covering the middle by how many times I get passed down the line. It often amazes me just how far I can push it. Sometimes the opposing team starts complaining that I'm poaching balls way on the other side of the court, and I just smile. Then they make one down the line every now and again, and then I play the next point conservatively, and then start pushing aggressively again. So thanks, Coach Stokke, for bringing this to my attention. It really helps my doubles game.

I preach your gospel at my club..
They still don’t listen!
Even first team players will not listen to my “stop guarding the alley” approach.

Good stuff. That's generally how I score my effectiveness at the net. Obviously you can't ignore the times you get passed down the line, but as long as the percentages work in your favor, you are doing a good job. Also, thanks for addressing situational awareness and opponent tendencies.

Ive been checking some of your videos and practised it during a few doubles games. It has given me a purpose at the net and actually enjoy being at the net now. I know how to proper position myself and be a constant threat.

A ball down the doubles line, great shot! The other balls I'll be there!

What if you have a very strong partner and they can handle what’s coming ? And they’re getting frustrated you’re getting passed ?

Great video and yes guilty of over covering at times, especially on my backhand side. Always love your doubles videos, keep them coming!!

Try to be where the ball might be and most important, be fast. Most are just too slow. Being beaten down the line feels terrible because it feels like you're not doing your job.

I was going to say not me, but we were playing #1 in our age group in the US a few years back pretty tough and my doing that almost every time was probably the difference in the match. My partner was not thrilled.

That's playing great percentage tennis. Yes, you might get passed down the line once in a while, but you’ll win more points by not following the ball. That down the line return off of a wide first serve is really hard to do if you think about Warlaw's directionals, especially at the rec level
