You're missing a trick Mr. B. Simply stick a big Bentleyesque blower on it and hang the carbs out in the breeze😂

I had a Rivera SU carby mounted on a 45 degree manifold, on my Shovelhead Harley.
First it faced forwards, and ran fine. Then I ran it facing backwards, purely so the intake
was under my thigh, and the rain couldn't get in. [flipped the manifold over.]
It worked beautifully, pointing in either direction.

I'll put in another vote for 6 SU's - subject to firing order issues which I think were common on inline sixes.

Love your choice of carbs! As a lifelong British car fan, I’m a huge sucker for Skinner's Union side-drafts. About 25 years ago, I built an overbored inline-six TR6 engine with a hot Dema Elgin camshaft. I hated the stock Zenith-Strombergs on my '73, and knew they couldn't feed the new build. So, I bored and ported the stock intake manifold from 1.75" to 2" and bolted on a pair of SU HD8s from a Jaguar XKE .It took plenty of fiddling, but once sorted, that glorified cast-iron tractor engine ran like a scalded cat! Can't wait to see your build progress. Keep up the great work. Cheers, JP

Putting the carbs below the exhaust on either side of the block would also work . I think there might be aircraft or old Bentley race engines that do it like that.

To help heat soak from the exhausts, try getting them ceramic coated, it makes quite the difference.

My 1958 Triumph Thunderbird was the last year to be factory fitted with an SU carb. Very economical on 650cc. Probably less so on 8,100cc. 🤣👍
