  Old Army vet here.  Pack light. I have one bag for under the seat and that's it.  Everything else gets checked. I'm not fighting with the idiot sitting in the back who feels he needs to put his bags in the first bin, so everyone else has to shift their bags further back. I've seen "personal" backpacks that looked like they were going camping for a month and carryons that take up two spaces. People are selfish and rude. that's why the rule changes are there.

  I’ll have to skip the carry on and wear 6 under pants, 2 pairs of socks, four shirts and 2 pairs of pants and walk on with 2 bare hands.  With all the clothes on, I’ll need to book 2 💺 seats

  The best advice I got when I traveled internationally for the first time in 1976 was “pack what you need and cut it by half”. I’ve been following that advice ever since and I’ve never had a bag turned away. and you don’t need a special scale to weigh your bag. Get on a scale and weigh yourself. Then get on the scale with yourself and your bag in your arms and anything you might be wearing when you board the plane. Simply do some subtraction and you’ve got your bag weight. The thing that causes the most problems is when people think that the overhead been belongs to them exclusively. I was on a flight to London last year, and there were several people around me who had more than two items up in the overhead bin and I had to go several seats up or back in order to get a spot for my carry-on that was well under the limit. Finally, the flight attendant came back to my seat seeing my frustration and looked at the people on either side man asked who’s items these were and told them there’s room for one thing up here not more than one and one lady had to check her bag, and she was really unhappy. But follow the rules and you won’t be unhappy.

  " One carry on for the overhead, one personal item to fit under the seat."   I watched one woman use an entire overhead herself.  She put up her carry-on, then she put her personal item next to it.  Her bulky coat went next to that, and the wide brim summer hat she was wearing went over the coat and viola - one entire overhead filled - and it should have been able to take 3 people's carry-ons.

  I'm 74 but think that air travel is out of the question even though I retired as a pilot with US Airways/American. I recall the first airline flight I took back in 1973 when I went from the curb at MCI (KC International) to New Orleans in less than 3 minutes. Simple check-in at the gate, great leg room in my coach seat, and a most pleasant experience. How things have changed now! I can see how so many travelers "lose it"...I just evolved in my 30+ years in the industry but rules do not favor those who use air travel occasionally like me.

  I see way too many oversized bags being ignored including backpacks that no way fit under the seat

  I never understand people being allowed to put their bags in bins that are not above their seat. I usually board pretty early, so i don't have issues, but I constantly see people stealing space that is not allocated tot hem.
