This is precisely the video I've been looking for. You don't even want to know his long it took to find you. Thank you!

Your videos are so refreshing and inspiring. I appreciated your thoughts on mono and stereo at the end of this one. Loved your reference to the Beatles process. I recently lost hearing in one ear and have been reluctant to get back into recording because I can’t hear in stereo anymore, but this made me think I still can. Thank you.

man, as usual this was awesome. i have been recording music for 30-ish years (mostly home/DIY or studio hybrid recording) and i still really enjoyed and learned a lot from this. oh and the new tunes on bandcamp are awesome! so inspiring, keep em coming, jordan.

I had a tascam DP24SD, amongst other setups, but since having my Zoom R4 which has 32 bit float for 2 days I have realised this is all I need to make a demo. Next is to find an easy to use DAW to master my tracks, but for someone like me who is primarily a singer song writer using a guitar and harmonica, possibly looking for electronic drum kit or keys. I have found the more simple the better. Zoom R4 is a great notepad for song ideas.

Thanks Jordan, another great video! I've recently gotten into field recording and it's very interesting, especially with stereo field recordings!

Always enjoy your rants.  You, and everyone, leaves one very important aspect out, that I discovered in my home recording struggles and joys.  You have to have some talent. The ability to sing and the ability to play your instruments in tune, in time and somewhat well to produce pleasing sounds.  Now, there is another aspect of home recording that I discovered too.  It may or may not be a necessity for you.  An audience.  Someone or people to listen to and hopefully enjoy your music.  There are a ton of very talented musicians and home recorders out there.  If your music is fun for you to make for your personal enjoyment, that's fine.  But if you ain't so good, no one wants to hear it.  That can be hard, or rather, disappointing and discouraging to deal with.  Ask me how I know.

Probably outside the scope of this particular video, if you're sticking strictly with equipment, but the recording space is an essential part of moulding the sound you record. 🙂👍

Great information on recording with a multitrack  tape machine. I've found a good way to mix and listen back to what's recorded is an old school stereo system. I picked up a Yamaha Natural Sound Series amplifier/receiver for $3 at a thrift store. That and a pair of bookshelf style speakers seems to work well. Now I'd like to add another cassette deck to mix down the 4 tracks to 2 tracks in stereo. This could prove to be the most expensive part of this approach. Depends if I can find a good price on a used deck. Cheers
