Suno Is Becoming A Record Label?... It's Over

Suno just had its biggest week since signing with Warner: audio watermarking, a new downloads policy, and a global licensing deal with BMG — all inside one week. On August 6, Suno published "How We're Building the Future of Music Responsibly," announcing three changes: download limits rolling out September 3 to curb mass-exporting, audio watermarking and fingerprinting technology to identify Suno-generated tracks, and rewritten community guidelines banning unauthorized voice cloning and song recreation. Six days later, Suno announced a global licensing deal with BMG — the first major rightsholder to license Suno since Warner in November 2025 — covering recorded music and publishing, settling prior use, and opening an opt-in for BMG artists to be compensated. This didn't happen in a vacuum. Sony and Universal are still suing Suno over how it trained its models, and the BMG deal landed just days after a German court ruled against Suno in a copyright case. Both things can be true at once: this is a $5.4B company protecting itself, and it's also the industry moving toward licensed, labeled, traceable AI music.
