I love this film. The fact that David is mentioned well over a hundred times while only seen for a few seconds and the tension that builds up between Brandon and Phillip and ultimately unravelling and giving themselves away is fantastic. Almost like the inverted mystery created by Levinson and Link with Columbo.

This is one of my favorite movies and I can't imagine anyone except John Dall playing Brandon. His subtle studder when under stress was genius.

Hitchcock was ahead of his time. And Farley Granger was so good in this movie.

All things considered, I consider this Hitch's best film ever. The plot is cleverly paced, the acting nothing less than great, and the scenery is just perfect. I don't think it could be improved upon.

Makes me wish for a comparison of this and the more direct film about the case "Compulsion" from 1959. Were critics and censors catching on there, too.
Wonder if "In Cold Blood" set off alarms...

It is actually the “forgotten” Hitchcock film.
He found the interpretation of the “sex” scene hilarious.
Just as they wanted the shower scene of Psycho. They sent it back to be edited. After a few hours he sent it back unchanged and it was put in.
“My dear boy” is not a remark of affection in the UK. At that time it could be used as a patronising comment, as in, “my dear boy, you really are a fool” etc etc

One bit of "if you know, you know" gay coding in the film is the choice of piano piece; Mouvement Perpetuel #1, by Francis Poulenc. Poulenc was gay.

Even as a young, naive movie lover, I didn't get the queer context until I was in my 20s. As an adult, the plot points were there to be seen.

However, I coveted that fabulous apartment so my coming out was inevitable 😅

The unraveling of Brandon and Phillip's interactions reminded me of the "frenemy" relationship between Michael and Harold in "The Boys in the Band".

To me, their sexuality was completely irrelevant. This was a study in sociopaths & why they committed the murder. John Dall was masterful at being creepy, perfect for a Hitchcock film.
