Ignoring and dismissing children's emotions inflicts much deeper wounds. I find the Japanese approach very correct. Just as we listen to our friends when they cry and don't ignore them, we should listen to our children as well. Let's not forget that crying is a child's way of communicating.

I tried the get close and whisper with one of my twins. Wonderful. But with both, it is impossible especially when we are outdoors.
