  Collecting is selectively choosing. Overconsumption is buying hoards and loads of items without being selective.

  Can we just agree that there's no such thing as collecting perishables? That already eliminates a lot of influencers with their shampoos, body lotions,  etc lol

  Monster High doll collector here. I've noticed this weird trend in the community, that whenever a new doll comes out, collectors will just buy it. Even if they don't like it. In fact, a lot of the time I see people complaining about how they DON'T like this new doll release, but they still get it anyway?? Like, I don't get that. I have the collecting mentality where I'll only get a new doll if it brings MEANING to my collection. Like sometimes I'll like the design of a new release, but I won't get it because I know it won't really have any special place in my collection other than, "I liked the look of it, I guess". I want my dolls to have MEANING. So the notion of just buying a doll that isn't that special to me, let alone one I don't even LIKE, is just so crazy to me.

  Personally, I think the line is that you should be able and excited to explain every single item in your collection.

  Hear me out, but if you find product bottles aesthetically pleasing and want to keep them on display, buy one, wash the bottle when you're finished and put the EMPTY bottle on display

  The body care stuff isn't cheap either.  No  one needs enough products to fill a retail store.

  Last year I bought someone's squishmallow collection for an absolute steal. They are no longer the 'hip and trendy' thing to collect, so they were getting rid of it.. but like.. they are super-cute plushies! So I took pictures of all of them, and I had all of my friends ( and friends of friends, and their partners.. I dont know THAT many people xD ) pick one, and I gave them away one by one. Sure, it used to be a collection, but now I made over 30 people happy with cute plushies!

  Something to note about LaKenzo (the Dandelion Crayon person): they also create some of their own collection pieces, with a lot of them being made from other items like melting down a bunch of dandelion Crayons to make 3D block letters of the word Dandelion. They also thrift almost all of their materials for all of their crafts to make things that they love and want to decorate with so they're not just collecting cause they love the one thing. They are creating joy and whimsy in their own life through creatively repurposing things other people no longer wanted and that's probably the most ideal way to collect rather than consuming

  As someone who collects A LOT of figures , I have been collecting for at least 10 years , maybe even more . I ONLY buy figures that I actually like. However, I don’t buy every anime figure in a fandom, I only collect the ones I actually like , and I try to only buy things I’ll actually cherish . This video REALLY helps people understand that, and that collecting has many differences from overconsumption.

  Something about Lakenzo that I wanna bring up is that there is a Crayola place factory thing open to the public where you can get a boat load of undamaged dandelion crayons but she never got them from there. She also had a PO box but closed it so people wouldn't send her crayons they found so that she could find and collect them herself. I think things like that proves shes very purposeful.

  My nana used to collect little porcelain shoes . She had them in display cases and on shelves and we would buy them for her for birthdays/Christmas… but over the decades, the collection became so huge that I think that the special shoes just got lost in a crowd of “just shoes “. One day I came to visit and they were ALL gone. My nan just said she was done with the collection - and gave them all away. I wonder now whether we all latched on to an “easy” gift to get her without truly considering if she actually wanted to continue this collection…
