i met keyes at a cafe in utah, north of salt lake. i hung out there all the time, it was a mostly locals haunt. he showed up and asked me to get him some weed, and i got such weird vibes. i was 100% positive he was a cop trying to bust me and or my friends (we smoked a bunch of weed and sold some here and there, like you do when you are a broke kid trying to get free weed). he was so persistant. finally, i just told him i could and he really wanted to come with us even though we didnt like take his money. we told him wed buy it and bring it back to him. i shuffled all my friends into the car real wuick and we gtf out of there.

i dont think he was trying to kill us or anything. i think he wanted weed. years later when all this came out, i got his photo because i was like "surely not" and asked my friends if they could id him without telling them anything about him. they ALL 100% i.d. him as that weird undercover cop that tried to bust us that day.

crazy. whenever i share this people just dimiss it and tell me im a liar, but idk. it was super surreal.

Also rest in peace to the girl who lost her life from the coffee shop. Hopefully she knows that she's the one who brought him down. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Keyes is possibly the most diabolical serial killer of all time, in my opinion. They are all cold and calculated, but this guy took it to the extreme. Excellent podcast, thanks!

I’ve listened to hours of his interviews and his laugh makes my skin crawl

I truly don't think he could give any names because who his victims were was never important to him

My friend DIANE and I were hiking the upper Dungeness River Trail in Washington state in the early 2000s. We were coming down the mountain across the little man-made bridge and we’re about 100 feet from the car when this tall man with wavy dark hair came out from underneath that bridge and began to follow us. It definitely was Israel Keyes. Thank God, my friend picked up immediately that he wasn’t safe. We began to walk to the car as fast as we could without running. Neither of us engaged him in conversation. When we got in the car, she was so freaked out she went the wrong direction on the road and had to turn around. There was no one in the parking lot, but us and him. He paced back and forth and never took his eyes off us. There was no one in the parking lot, but us and him. DIANE‘s car was the only car in the parking lot. Watch him pace in Alaska outside that coffee stand. That’s when he dove through that window and took that girl. He acted just the same when he was pacing back-and-forth watching us and never taking his EYES off of us. This happened in the early 2000s in Washington state on the upper Dungeness River Trail.

Failed to mention the fact that he was a prolific bank robber as well - a very high-risk means of acquiring a cashflow.

I believe there's so many more victims that will never be attributed to him which is so sad. I can't believe you took the coward way out. How can you do all this and not think your daughter's going to find out???? Come on. Hopefully one day families do have answers because I believe there are more kill kits in places that no one has thought of

The thing that broke Keyes compartmentalization was Kimberly breaking up with him and setting boundaries for babysitting his daughter. This severely ate into his free time to spend on criminal activities and caused him to get really depressed. (More so than the Alaska winters) He wasnt meeting his desires and was itching to fulfill his sinister needs before he left on vacation the next day. That's what ultimately led to him taking Samantha so close to home. Also, Keyes was a bank robber. He wasn't some risk adverse guy who all of sudden got sloppy. He was always engaging in high risk behaviors. Even he said he knew it was just a matter of time.

Oh man, I’ve been waiting for this episode! Excellent as always. This is such good, detailed, nuanced coverage of the case.

I lived in Alaska during this time and one of my hiking spots that I went to often had a “kill kit” buried not to far off the trail. One of the scariest things I’ve experienced, just the thought of how close he was… 😞😬
