The Author Who Speaks to the Green River Killer — What Gary Ridgway Is Saying Today

What does one of America's most prolific serial killers say when he's spent more than two decades behind bars? For years, author Maria DiLorenzo has corresponded with Gary Ridgway—the Green River Killer—offering a rare window into the mind of a man convicted of murdering 49 women and who later confessed to many more. In this episode of UNMARKED, I sit down with Maria to examine what Ridgway's letters, interviews, and prison conversations reveal about the psychology of one of history's most prolific serial killers. We explore the violent fantasies that preceded the murders, the role of psychopathy, why Ridgway targeted vulnerable women, how he evaded capture for nearly twenty years, and why he may still be trying to control the story of who Gary Ridgway really is. If you've heard the legend of the Green River Killer, this may change how you understand the man behind it. Chapters: 00:00 – The Green River Killer Gary Ridgway murdered so many women that even he couldn't remember them all. Decades after his arrest, new interviews and private conversations offer a rare look inside one of America's most prolific serial killers. 08:31 – The Making of Gary Ridgway A troubled childhood, learning disabilities, violent fantasies, and an obsession with power and control reveal the early warning signs that shaped the Green River Killer. 20:11 – From Fantasy to Murder (slightly better than "Fantasy Becomes Murder") As Seattle's SeaTac Strip becomes one of America's busiest prostitution corridors, Ridgway's violent fantasies evolve into a calculated pattern of targeting vulnerable women. 31:54 – How Ridgway Avoided Capture (more curiosity-driven and SEO-friendly) Investigators uncover body disposal patterns, calculated planning, and the methods Ridgway used to evade police for years. 42:59 – The Investigation That Nearly Solved the Case (avoids implying police failure too strongly) Detectives interview Ridgway, search his home, and collect evidence years before DNA technology finally identifies the Green River Killer. 54:31 – The Final Questions (more intriguing than "Can a Serial Killer Ever Change?") After 49 murder convictions, Ridgway embraces religion and continues shaping his public image, leaving investigators and victims' families questioning whether the full truth will ever be known.
