I know it's a single player thing but cpu hold throws were incredibly brutal back in the day. The fact that cpu Dahlsim could murder you in one close range noogie probably gave a lot of casual players a predisposition to hating throws.

I always found ST dictator fascinating because of things like this. For those who don't know, he's a character who's only real reversal requires full super meter and a charge. This means that he has multiple matchups where he's just DEAD if the opponent gets a KD or a throw without meter, and if memory servers one matchup (boxer) where he's dead either way because he can cross you up before the tick throw.

And yet, he's playable. Really really interesting to watch high level dictator play knowing all of this.

Not many people knew reversals existed back in the day since from what I remember, none of the US gaming magazines ever explained it. Also, we thought that tick throws were actually throwing the opponent while in block stun as it sure looked like that was what was happening and like with reversals, none of the resources available explained things clearly. I'm sure in Japan with easy access to the devs and magazines like Gamest, they had the info already.

Yeah it’s what is missing these days. The real threat of getting punched in the face by the person you just throw looped in the arcade.

Something else to note is how the damage is "reduced" when teching throws. I don't know when it stopped but in the first instances of SF2, you took the full damage of the throw, then the game gave you back the health you kept with the tech.

This means that if you were in range of a full damage throw kill, teching was useless since your life went to zero before the game giving it back, therefore considering it a lose.
