Guessing the high beryllium content is why this specific type is rarely made now. a piece of that breaking would create its own biohazard.

1:15:37 in the aerospace industry we work with surface roughness around 16 microns, and we’ll reject parts for having a scratch you can only see under magnification. it’s actually wild how important smooth surfaces are for any high heat/pressure application

I love how the recipes for all these metallic glasses read (to anyone without a background at least tangentially related to materials science) as just the most random recipes. It literally feels like they just pick 4 or 5 elements out of a hat at random, and then throw darts at a dartboard to determine the ratios between them... I have so much respect for the people who work with and understand this stuff 😂😂😂

My late father was certified to deal with 'special steels', which was the British euphemism for nuclear hard in the 70s.

tbf, if i'm close enough to a nuclear weapon that is throwing Beryllium out, I have bigger problems then Beryllium poisoning

The filter being slightly below the window doesn't really matter much, the pressure in the fume hood is lower than the ambient pressure because there's a constant pumping of air out of it, this causes the air from the surrounding area to be sucked into the fume hood at all times, the flow of air is always inwards, and effectively no air from inside the chamber can exit. This constant flow of air also takes all but the heaviest particles with it, this is literally what they are designed to do, the amount of air that moves through one of those fume hoods is honestly shocking, it moves a tremendous amount of air and creates a very strong draft, especially when the door is very low.

So, the answer to why nobody makes bouncy disks is because nobody wants to deal with beryllium unless necessary.

The fume hood is operated at air pressure lower than the room it is in. A blower constantly pulls air and contaminants out of the hood.
