The intricate development of working ropes and masks over the centuries, has always been a marvel for me. Thank you Kroum

I once had to step a keel-stepped aluminum mast on a 26' sloop without a crane. 4 strong men were required each holding a stay, and another really strong one at the foot end to tilt, lift, and walk the mast to the hole in the cabin top and guide it down to sit on the silver dollar I set there. Precarious. Doing it 50 feet up sounds incredibly dangerous. But, amazingly it was done all the time in the old days. Spend the money on the crane! ;)

That was interesting! Thank you very much! I had no idea how that is done.

In the real world, you would also want to have the shrouds ready to slip over the topmast.

This is the one I have been waiting for. Shame the videos are only for your paying viewers and not the rest of us watchers.<br>If you have a chance to visit ,you should have a look at the Long Island Maritime museum. It is small and mostly small boats of the great South Bay. There is one boat however that might be of particular interest . It started as a catboat. A retired Norwegian ship captain rebuilt it for his sons as a barkentine. It has two fully rigged mast with all the lines . He did it so his family could learn to sail a proper square rig, topsails and topgallants. The Two Brothers, by necessity, is steered by a whipstaff.

I appreciated the humor in this one, Kroum. I do have a question though. In Olha's video where she was installing the fid, she tied it in with rope. Is this typical of all ships of the period, or is this not always done? I have never seen this detail before, and had always assumed, since most fids I have seen are somewhat wedge-shaped, that they were held by the weight of the mast and being forced into the hole in the mast. Or perhaps I have missed this detail for the last 20 years.
