Thanks for another informative video. Is it known how the 2 and 3 masted vessels were first developed? Did Mediterranean sailors add the square sail to their foremast or did the Northern sailors add the lateen to their mizzenmast?

Thank you for another informative video, Mr. Batchvarov! I wasn't aware the lateen mizzen remained in use until nearly the middle of the 18th century. That's roughly 3 or 4 decades later than I'd thought, though I was aware that the yard remained more or less the same until much later (and the boom appeared later still). Meanwhile, I've always been of the impression that the mizzen yard was shifted to leeward after tacking? I'ven't seen any iconography to suggest otherwise, though I admit paintings and drawings always need to be taken with a pinch of salt.<br><br>I second the love of the spritsail topsail, and would eagerly await a dedicated video to that topic. Thank you for the information. I did not realize lateens lasted that long. Having sailed in a cat, I can verify a gaff main is a real pain to raise and it is abundantly clear why sloop / Marconi rigs now dominate. I don't know how Slocum managed it without throwing his back out ;)
