  The live service push is like a CEO hearing that some paintings can sell for hundreds of millions of dollars. So they decide to set up an assembly line of minimum wage workers pumping out new paintings. They don’t understand what makes some products masterpieces and others regrettable garbage.

  The classic issue is that the end user is not the actual customer for video game companies anymore…it’s their shareholders.  Because of that, it’s not actually people who play games that developers are marketing to, it’s the people who invest directly in the company.  Investors generally aren’t interested in the things that motivate gamers, like quality products and artistic vision.  Instead, developer focus is on how games can generate revenue.  They trot out terms like “live service” and “engagement”, lean on formulas with proven popularity, and generally assemble each game like an equation that’s supposed to lead to the greatest possible profit earned.  They want to break down success into a mathematical formula, then exploit said formula as much as humanly possible, because that is what keeps their shareholders happy.

  Most game studios have given up with the risk of new games. They are now stuck in the pattern of rereleasing 15 year old game after a slight update and reselling them for $80-$100 a pop all over again not realizing that people want new stuff not the same stuff from a quarter century ago!

  biggest issue is people are tired of live service garbage because it's all low effort junk which will be taken down when the company running it says it is not making enough money. remakes are okay when they stick to the feel of the game (grim dark fear inducing does not equal let's make it light and cartoony) they are remaking if you change it too much then why redo it.
