I’m 45, with a (very) modest income and a family to support. This is how I stay out of debt and still manage to save: I pay cash whenever I can. I walk instead of driving when it’s possible. I work out at home or in the park instead of paying for a gym. I buy secondhand clothes and books. In the summer, I keep the lights off during the day. I drink tap water. I order takeout maybe once every couple of months and cook at home for both daily meals and work. I keep subscriptions to a minimum, just a music service, no Netflix, Disney+, no nothing. If I don’t have the money for something, I simply don’t buy. As a family, we avoid using credit as much as possible and pay everything in full. When money is tight, I still save, sometimes even just $20 a week.

Save early for retirement. Have no debt. Divorce or death, always should have a plan B, so you can take care of yourself. Both can be devastating ...

Ask any woman who has been trapped with no means in a bad marriage if she regrets not having her own money. Never put yourself in that position. Always have a secured “out” card up your sleeve.

I am French from Spanish descent and my grandmother who literally starved as a child (being born during the civil war in a poor family) told me once that being rich meant having no debt whatsoever and owning your own house ❤

We are trying to pay off our house, and save $200,000. Then I can start my “barista” retirement, where I just work to make spending money and not touch my investments until I can’t work.
