  I've never thought of the US as the wealthiest country. I've always thought of it as the country where the majority of the world's wealthiest individuals live. That's a huge difference.

  I think people don't say it enough how hard it is to be surrounded by peers in different economic circumstances. So many of my friends post grad made 2x my income or more and or had family help with rent in a high cost city for literally years. Meanwhile after bills, I had $300 a month to my name for food, clothes, doctor appointsments, savings, everything. And watching others just drop cards like it meant nothing...oof.

  I find it even more horrifying that you did all “the things” to set your self up for success by spending money on college, and you could not find not one job that paid you a decent wage.  That above all speaks to just how broken this country is. And that whole situation gets worse every year.

  The depression from being poor and one emergency away from being homeless is so stressful. Glad you touched on this. It's something that's hard to understand unless you've been there. I've had higher income people in my life say, "Just get a higher paying job!". Like it's so easy! I'm doing better now but will never forget the moment I stopped feeling sad and stressed all the time because I actually had money. I thought there was something wrong with me and I was doomed to be sad forever.

  I don’t know where these people are finding these part time jobs that are so understanding of schedules. I work two right now and it’s a nightmare getting just those two to line up.

  I graduated college in 99 so I’m going to tell you guys how much you got screwed because there’s nothing special about me - just good timing. I did a 6 month internship and turned that HR internship and a psychology undergrad into a salaried HR job 3 weeks after graduation. Full benefits, all that. I made $22k and so did my then husband. We bought an $80k house with zero down in a great neighborhood immediately. Interest was 9% but that was lower than it had been. <br>I had a full academic scholarship for having been valedictorian of my class. That was all I needed to have to get that. I had no family support so I worked 3-4 part time jobs all the time during school. It cost $82 a credit hour - lowest cost but fully accredited in-state school. <br>That head start meant I was a manager by 29 and on my 3rd upgrade home. Now I teach at that same university and feel awful about how the ladder was pulled up behind me. However, my former students have asked me to run for state senate (Indiana) and I am, and I’m going to win. I’m going to fix this corporate takeover crap, in addition to stopping the data center movement being shoved upon us by the state. <br>It’s going to take more of us Gen Xers to stand up for yall and put it right!

  One of the main reasons this worked was luck. She never got too sick to work multiple part time jobs. She never had a major car accident. She didn’t get pregnant. She didn’t have any family emergencies. She had the strength to work from 5 AM to late at night for years. Now imagine someone who has health problems or a child trying to do this.

  I think this could have been me in an alternative universe. The only difference is LUCK. I grew up in poverty and should have graduated from college in 2008 (during the great recession), but I was indecisive and put off college for 7 years, graduating in 2016 w/ an English degree and $25k in student loans. I got my first corporate job ($32k) right out of college because a “friend of a friend” put in a good word for me at a law firm. I was able to afford a high cost of living city for $545/mo because I had three roommates. My next job ($95k) was because a coworker put in a good word for me. I feel like I’ve stumbled into every opportunity in life, but I wasn’t special, it was luck

  The US student loan process is wild, from the perspective of me as an Australian. We don&apos;t have to pay back our loans until we start earning $67,000 a year. If you earn more than $180k, then you pay back 10% of it, but up until that income it&apos;s only a small percentage.
