  The guard who went to raise the alarm walked 1.5 miles on ballast with a broken ankle, i knew all 3 staff. It was Donalds birthday that weekend.

  I used to criticize the rail network for shutting down service if so much as a leaf fell on the track in autumn, but seeing what a 'little bit of water running across the track' can do to the embankment does give a bit more perspective to the reality of the problem.

  Just on a tangent, the Westinghouse air brake company in Doncaster (known as WabTec) announced this week that the entire site is to be closed down, with the loss of 400 jobs. Well, they didnt announce it, they still havent told the staff, however they did tell the small management team, after getting them to sign NDAs, but someone snitched. This will end over 100 years of rail works being on this site, apparently with operations being transferred to Derby.

  The minute you said "Carillion" my heart sank. Over budget, poor work supervision and everything running late. I've seen them in action. Fortunately they are no longer trading.

  So Network Rail were fined, meaning the fine was paid by the Taxpayer, while Carillion, who caused the accident by their negligence, walked away Scot free. &nbsp;Typical.

  I was living in Aberdeen when this happened, my best friend got seconded to the lab in Dundee to help with testing for a certain pathogen, I was in the Aberdeen lab when the crash happened. I remember the insane thunderstorm and rain, we had water flash flooding through our basement, I called her distraught just hoping she wasn&apos;t on the train. She missed it because the flash flooding from the storm disrupted the bus to the train station. Unreal. The one thing I remember was our hospital getting put on alert and the fact that no one came. We had no idea if it was because the train was empty due to lockdown or if there was no one left. Thankfully the first. It could have been a hundred times worse if Aberdeen hadn&apos;t been in a local lockdown at the time.

  I used to work for a window frame supplier that Carillion approached to start buying from us, a fairly small business.<br><br>Over about 6 months we needed all these processes written for everything everybody does so we would be &quot;up to their standard&quot;.<br><br>In the end they didn&apos;t sign a contract because they didn&apos;t believe we were big or professional enough.<br><br>Talk about dodging a bullet.

  The luck for there to be only 9 people in total on board on such a long and normally busy train is really something of a miracle

  If memory serves, the sht-stirrers at a certain rag reverted to type and decided to run various false claims about the incident, including blaming the driver for speeding.<br><br>RIP Brett, Donald and Christopher.

  Even more tragic fact was that &nbsp;the Train Driver lived in nearby Drumlithie with his family, he died so close to home and the smoke could be seen for miles .
