5 Harsh Truths About Your Antiques (Before Your Children Have To Deal With Them).

👉 How to find out what your things are really worth → https://mrwalterashford.com She always said it came from somewhere. 📓 That is the sentence. I have heard some version of it in more American kitchens than I could count, said by a grown son holding a piece up to the window, genuinely trying to help. Europe, maybe. Or it was a wedding present. Or it came from the grandmother in the photograph, the one whose name everybody has slightly differently. And I nod, and I write nothing down, because there is nothing to write. The object in that man's hands was fine. It had survived a hundred years, two house moves and a flood in a basement. The object was never at risk. ⭐ AND THE DETAIL THAT REFRAMES EVERYTHING: the knowledge dies before the object does. And when I stand in a house and price what is in it, I am not really paying for the object — I am paying for what I can stand behind. A piece with its history and the identical piece without it are the same object and they are not the same proposition, and every dealer you will ever deal with works that way. I would rather you heard it from me than found it out sideways. Five hard truths, and not one of them is about the market: 🗄️ Nobody in the history of this trade has ever sorted a house. They sorted a drawer. Which drawer to start with, and why it is not the important one. 📱 Your children are not going to look anything up — and it is not their fault. What they will actually do instead takes eleven minutes, happens in a hallway, and everybody genuinely believes they have checked. 📦 You are sorting by the wrong unit. Families sort by ROOM and by prettiness; the market sorts piece by piece and does not care which room a thing stood in. The three piles to make instead, and why only the middle one matters. ⏳ The deadline is not the day you die. It is an ordinary Tuesday some years earlier — and the knowledge goes in a particular order, which tells you exactly what to write down first. 🚫 And the honest half: the middle pile is also where I make my living. I have priced houses lower than I wanted to, and it was nobody's fault. There was just silence where a sentence used to be, and I had to price the silence. Then there is Verlie, out past Hannibal, and the one-dollar spiral notebook in her hall drawer — the only house in forty years where I did not have to guess at anything. Turn it over. Read the bottom.
