So complicated! We switched to making mostly ROTH contributions, it’s a good bucket and will be the last money we spend. Fun having Uncle Sam as your perpetual partner, we have done a good job keeping Uncle Sam going! Thanks for the great video!

Closing out a smaller 403b we have: 7200/yr, paying taxes on 7200 and adding to the 2000 from savings to stay under the 8600 limit.

I maxed out my Roth IRAs in my working years, have no traditional IRA. Can one do a backdoor from a tax-deferred investment other than an IRA?

Is there by chance an IRS publication that explains access to the earnings as clearly as you do?

Many thanks! Even though you and many more clearly describe the 5 year rules there are still way too many accountants and other financial professionals that insist that I keep track of every Roth conversion that I started 10 years ago and finished last year. I am over 70 and my Roth IRA has been open for well over 5 years.

Question: I am currently age 55, and have been contributing to a pre-tax 401k and also contributing to a 401k Roth since 2006. When I retire at age 65, my 401k account will convert to an IRA, and I imagine the 401k Roth portion converts to a separate Roth IRA. Does my 5 year timer start at age 60 when I retire and my 401k Roth becomes just a Roth IRA? Note: I do not have a separate Roth IRA account at this time.

IF you do a contribution from your paycheck into a roth acct (available in addition to 401k) and you plan on doing more conversions when you retire in three years....does every conversion have to wait a five year waiting period before it can be utilized (the base amount and the earnings) or is that a non factor if you are over 60?
