One additional reason to convert to ROTH is a known inheritance in the future. You may want to convert to ROTH in advance of receiving the inheritance which would put you in higher tax brackets.

Also, my understanding is that you should keep some of your pre-tax IRA without converting so it can be used for healthcare near end of life. It can be withdrawn tax free to pay for qualified healthcare costs. It can also be withdrawn tax free when given as a qualified charitable contribution. So keeping a bucket of untaxed money available to the end is wise.

The only piece not mentioned in this video is that Medicare looks back at your taxable income from 2 yrs prior.<br>That determines what your medicare costs will be.

Thank you ! Very clear and in line with my thoughts. 67 yrs old with 1.4M IRA. Haven't converted to roth. Retired at 56 and used my taxable til 62 to collect SS. And medicaid. After 65 I have been harvesting long term capital gains. I am going to harvest capital gains couple more years then convert to roth if I need.

My biggest money problem wasnt budgeting it was just following bad advice that kept me broke… Financial freedom isnt about the number in your account, its about the structure protecting it. Psychological Wealth Paradox by Alden Rothman is the only book that isnt some modern fluff

I'd say that the reason to do conversions is not JUST to get more into a Roth account, but it is to reduce the amount that is in the traditional IRA. Whether it goes to you for spending (a withdrawal), with holding to pay tax or put it all in a Roth all reduce the tIRA balance. Why this is important is that in the future, your RMD is determined by the tIRA balance. That then determines tax bracket and IRMAA bracket.

Predicting future tax brackets is tricky. All 3 of us siblings thought we'd be in lower brackets in retirement. All 3 are actually in higher ones. We also are more comfortable and have money for some splurges, a nice change from the penny pinching pre-retirement years.

Excellent explanation. Our scenario is nearly identical to the one you presented and most financial planners ignore the impact on ACA income limits. They blindly recommend Roth conversions.

Option 3: ask your broker to withhold taxes and fill up with money from post-tax account. Same as option 2, but sufficient withholdings avoid strict period tracking of estimated tax and can even retroactively cover underpayments earlier in the year.
