Sebs, to really get this song, you have to get the context. It was the late 60s. The Vietnam War was at its height. The military draft was active and hundreds of thousands of young American men were leaving on jet planes, not knowing if they would be coming home to their girlfriends or wives. This was an American anthem of the time.

The Peter Paul and Mary version was thought to be about a soldier going away to war song, but Denver's version gives a better sense about a singer going on the road.

My husband served a mission for our church years ago. I remember he and I listening to this song. Neither of us quite made a promise at that time, but it was in our hearts and now we just shared our 43rd anniversary.
